The governance of general Nazario Benavides and the importance of intrigues. San Juan, 1836-1853

Abstract

José Nazario Benavides governed the province of San Juan from 1836 to 1853. The political conflicts that arose during this period led to the intertwining of Benavides’ figure with the fate of the San Juan people in the context of the events of national
organization.

This article aims to elucidate his consolidation as a local leader, characterizing his paternalistic government, focusing on three historical moments of his governance: firstly, his assumption of power in 1836, linked to the uprising against San Juan Governor
Martín Yanzón and the invasion of La Rioja; secondly, his consolidation as a political and military leader of the province during General Acha’s invasion of Cuyo; and a third moment, facing the events that questioned his power after the Battle of Caseros and
Juan Manuel de Rosas’ absence.

Methodologically, we approach the work using the method typical of history, working with historical sources from the General Archive of the Province of San Juan and a compilation of sources from the publication Archive of Brigadier General José Nazario
Benavides. These sources are analyzed to examine his governance, good government, paternalistic rule, and characteristics as a local leader.
