Mercado, María Inés; Graciela Inés Ponessa y Alfredo Grau, 2006. ?Anatomy of Yacón leaves tea, Smallanthus sonchifolius (Asteraceae)?. Lilloa 43 (1-2). Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp. & Endl.) H. Robinson (Asteraceae, Heliantheae), known as yacón, is a herbaceous, perennial plant, traditionally cultivated in the Andes, recently extended to the world. Yacon leaves has been used in infusions by their hypoglycemic and antioxidant properties. The present research identified the following anatomic features with diagnostic value in yacon tea samples fron Capão Bonito (San Pablo, Brasil) anomocytic stomata, epidermal cells with sinuous (adaxial) to very sinuous (abaxial) anticlinal walls, glandular and eglandular trichomes, secretory cavities, mesophyll with palisade H-shaped cells and lipid.
