Application of principal component analysis (PCA) to identify varieties of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) based on morphometric characteristics of the pollen grain. The morphological characteristics of the pollen are recognized as important to delineate inter-and infrageneric taxa. This study explores the structure of relations of 15 varieties of Chenopodium quinoa Willd (Amaranthaceae) based on four morphometric characteristics of the pollen (equatorial diameter, exine thickness, pore diameter, and total number of pores), using the multivariate method Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Normed PCA was used on a correlation matrix R. Through the PCA selected the first two components account for 77% of the total variation of the data. The first component retained 48% of the total variability and defines an axis of variation in pollen diameter and thickness of the exine. The second component explains 29% of the total variance and shows a gradient of pore size and the number of pores in the pollen. The diagram generated by the PCA system shows a good separation of the varieties studied. We conclude that the PCA is a powerful tool for identifying quinoa varieties from pollen characteristics studied.
