Abstract

Ordano, Mariano; Karina Aguilar Tejada; Analía Benavídez. 2011. “Characterization of the intra-individual variation in fruit size and shape in Psychotria carthagenensis Jacq. (Rubiaceae)”. Lilloa 48 (2). The variation in a characteristic evaluated at the intra-individual level might have evolutionary and ecological implications that seldom have been considered in the study of plant-animal interactions. In this work it is proposed to evaluate the importance of intra-individual variation in fruit size and shape in Psychotria carthagenensis, a bird-dispersed fleshy-fruit producing species. Most variation in characteristics of the fruit was accounted for the intra-individual level (circularity = 84,5%, area = 70,1%, diameter =56,2%). Repetibility estimations suggest a greater response to selection in fruit size. Significant relationships among the characters with repeated measures within a plant (including mean, median, standard deviation, variance, coefficient of variation, skewness, and kurtosis), and the characters with unique measurements by plant (plant size and fruit number), were not detected. The consideration of the intra-individual variation level in future studies is promoted, and their evolutionary and ecological implications in plant-disperser interactions are discussed.
