Hardness, tightness and porosity tests with local woods

Abstract

The determination of hardness according to the Brinell method is now often used on wood. In this way the author examined around 160 types of Argentinian wood and established a special hardness scale for them. The density and porosity of the wood was also determined on the basis of the relative and absolute specific weights. With the values obtained, it was proposed to classify the woods according to density and porosity.

The lowest hardness number (1.21) was found for Croton urucurana wood, the highest (16.40) for Celtis tala wood. Itin wood (Prosopis Kuntzei) has the greatest density with a value of 0.845, and the greatest porosity was picked up by Erythrina falcata (0.880).

?Härte-, Dichtigkeits- und Porositätsversuche mit hiesigen Hölzern?

Die Härtebestimmung nach der Brinellschen Methode wird jetzt vielfach anf Holz angewendet. Der Verfasser untersuchte auf diese Weise ungefihr 160 Arten von argentinischen Hölzern und stellte fiir diese eine besondere Härteskala auf. Die Dichtigkcit und Porosität der Hölzer wurde auchanf Grund der relativen und absoluten specifischen Gewichte bestimmt. Mit den erhaltenen Werten wurden Einteilungen der Hölzer nach Dichtigkeit und Porosität vorgeschlagen.

Die niedrigste Härtezahl (1,21) wurde für Croton urucurana-Holz., die höchste (16,40) für Celtis tala-Holz gefunden. Die grösste Dichtigkeit hat das Itin-Holz (Prosopis Kuntzei) mit der Dichtigkeizahl 0,845, und die grösste Porosität wurde von Erythrina falcata (0,880) aufgewlesen.
