Abstract

Osteopontin (OPN) was found in all the vertebrate species where it was investigated. This protein has been found in milk of various domesticated and laboratory mammal species. In this study, we present the results of its occurrence in tapir milk. In this wild specie, OPN is expressed as two electrophoretic bands of 58 and 75 kDa, which very probably represent monomers, and a third polymeric band with a MW higher than 200 kDa. OPN was observed in greater concentration in lactoserum (68%) than in casein micelles (32%). In this latter compartment, only the two monomeric forms are present.
