Abstract

Morphometric data show that Batrachophrynus macrostomus Peters differs widely from 24 species and subspecies of Telmatobius so that even if it was not toothless, it would deserve its generic status. B. brachydactylus Peters, while considerably more similar to Telmatobius by its appearence, is also morphometrically distinct and often in a way which is opposite to that of macrostomus. Therefore, it seems to constitute an independent lineage and deserve also a generic autonomy which is proposed under the name of Lynchophrys. The validity of Atelognathus Lynch, based on Batrachophrynus patagonicus Gallard is morphometrically confirmed.
