A new species of Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) (Nematoda: Camallanidae), parasite of Trichomycterus corduvensis (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae), in Northern Argentina.

Abstract

A new species of parasite Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) Pinto, Fabio, Noronha y Rolas, 1974 was isolated, Procamallanus (S.) huacraensis sp. n., in the freshwater fish, Trichomycterus corduvensis Weyenbergh, 1877 collected in the Huacra River, Santa Rosa Depar tment, Province of Catamarca, Argentina. This species is characterized by the basal ring of the buccal capsule weakly differentiated in both sexes, the inner surface of the buccal capsule with 3-4 ridges, and presence of two pairs of postanal papillae in males; deirids with round distal end. In females, the vulva is postecuatorial without elevated lips. This article describes a fourth species for the subgenus Spirocamallanus of Argentinean freshwater fishes, and the first species from trichomicterids in Argentina.
