Abstract

New geological mapping campaigns in the Alamor-Lancones basin reported the Potrerillos intrusive east of Macará. This intrusive intrudes volcanoclastic rocks of the Ciano Formation. However, the intrusive's petrography, geochemistry, and age are unknown. This paper discusses the tectonic setting of the Potrerillos intrusive based on new lithostratigraphic, petrographic, and geochemical data collected in the Bocana La Laja to Vicin section. The quartz monzonites Potrerillos consist of a dome-like body, trending NE and 1.53 km long. Its mineralogy includes albite, oligoclase, microcline, quartz, hornblende, augite, and biotite, with a phaneritic, holocrystalline, and unequigranular texture. Major oxide concentrations indicate calc-alkaline potassium affinity, magnesium series, perluminic to metalluminic, saturated in silica. Low concentrations of Ta, P, Yb, Nb, Ti, Ni, Cr, and ratios Th/Yb, Ta/Yb, Th/Ta, Th/Hf, Ta/Hf, and relative enrichment in LREE and slight negative anomalies of Eu indicate that the the Potrerillos intrusive is linked to a volcanic arc on an active continental margin.
