9th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FLUVIAL SEDIMENTOLOGY

24th – 28th AUGUST, 2009
SAN MIGUEL DE TUCUMÁN - ARGENTINA

The International Conference on Fluvial Sedimentology (ICFS) has been held each 4 years from 1977. The last venue was in Delft (The Netherlands) in August, 2005. During the plenary assembly Argentina was elected as next venue for this event.

This occasion will be the first time that an ICFS would be held on South America. In the same way, it is an excellent opportunity to meet fluvial sedimentologists to discuss and interchange experiences, visit extensive outcrops along and across to Argentina, look modern and ancient examples from the Precambrian until Today or more exactly until the next August, 2009.

Previous ICFS:
1st, 1977, Calgary, Canada,
2nd, 1981, Keele, United Kingdom,
3rd, 1985, Fort Collins, USA,
4th, 1989, Sitges, Spain,
5th, 1993, Brisbane, Australia,
6th, 1997, Cape Town, South Africa,
7th, 2001, Lincoln, USA,
8th, 2005, Delft, The Netherlands.

According to our point of view, Argentina and Tucumán are closing related to the subjects developed during the ICFS. The sedimentologists from Argentina are organized into Asociación Argentina de Sedimentología that is sponsored the organization of 9th ICFS. Besides, we already have the supported of others Scientific Associations (Asociación Geológica Argentina and Asociación Paleontológica Argentina), Scientific Institutions (as Fundación Miguel Lillo), Universities and Companies, and we are persuaded to organize a success 9th ICFS.

The Organizing Committee is formed by Sedimentologists from different Universities and Scientific Institutions of Argentina, and from others countries.

Province of Tucumán is located in the Northwest of Argentina, between mountains and Pampean plains; it is just at the foot of mountain ranges about 5,000 m and more. Previously to 24th August, three field trips will be performing, visiting the north, center and west of Argentina (Humahuaca, Calchaquí and Ischigualasto valleys). During the ICFS will be develop others three field trips around to Tucumán to show the local geology and share the plenty of beauties as well (northeast ranges and Santa María valley). After 28th August, three more excursions will be waiting to people to enjoy more about fluvial sedimentology and personal experiences (Paraná River, the Neuquén oil basin and Patagonia). One tip more, there are some wines cellars just along the route of some field trips we hope can distract the people from the outcrops and visit them, you will have to come here and discover if the field trip is red or white.
